First-Week Scripts
First-Week Scripts for New Engineering Managers
Use these scripts as a starting point. Adjust to your style and your team's context.
Team Kickoff (First Day)
Script: "I'm here to help us deliver reliably and grow together. For the first few weeks I'll be listening, learning our systems, and removing blockers. Expect 1:1s with me this week—please be candid about what's working and what's not."
- Set expectations: what you'll do, what you won't change yet.
- Invite direct feedback and concerns anonymously if needed.
Intro 1:1s
Script: "I want to understand your work, ambitions, and friction. What's one thing we should keep, stop, and start? Where do you need my help most?"
- Ask about workload, on-call, and growth goals.
- Capture commitments and send a short recap.
Stakeholder Alignment
Script: "Here's how I'll keep you in the loop: weekly notes, bi-weekly syncs, and fast flags on risks. What does 'great communication' look like for you?"
- Clarify decision makers vs. informed parties.
- Share your initial cadence proposal and adjust.
Scope Guardrail
Script: "We won't change everything at once. For the next two sprints we'll focus on stability and clarity. If new work arrives, we'll triage it together against current commitments."
- Prevents scope creep while you learn the system.
- Signals you protect the team and delivery.
Weekly Update Template
- Wins
- Delivery status (traffic-light) + risks
- People/health: on-call load, morale, capacity
